Missing the PPA in Memphis

July 30th, 2007

I’ve been friends with a certain small group of photographers for three years now. We’ve seen each other through some pretty major accomplishments and have seen wonderful growth in our businesses in a short period of time. We have weathered many dramatic moments in our personal lives as well. Unfortunately, this week I’m missing the biggest gathering of my friends to date while they meet at the Professional Photographers of America’s seminar in Memphis, TN. Before the cancer diagnosis, I had my tickets bought and my reservations at the Peabody Hotel confirmed. (See the famous ducks above.) Now, my suitcases are lying neglected and remain unpacked and I’ve got appts and procedures at the hospital every day this week. I’m just so sad to miss out on finally meeting these wonderful photographers that I have come to know and love, trust and depend on every day for the last three years! Girls, have a drink for me! And one of you had BEST take some darn pictures!

Home sweet home!

July 21st, 2007

Well, we were blessed to have talented packers and a fabulous mover. We made it to VA Beach. We’re in the new house. We’ve agitated the water in the new pool sufficiently. We’ve set up all of our dates with the Oncologist. Now we can breathe a little and take the time to get settled in. I’m surrounded by boxes which can be a tad overwhelming and, unfortuntately for me, I’m also itching to get my camera out. (I can only go for so long without the need to be creative!) I’ll try to post something when I get the business computer up and running in the next few days.

Tah tah for now.

Harry Potter Predictions

July 8th, 2007

Because we’re Harry Potter book fans in our house and I’m procrastinating with all of the many things I have to do before the packers get here tomorrow, here are our predictions for the last book in the series:

Who will die?

Leslie: Lord Voldemort is a given. Possibly Ginny Weasley, Prof. Snape, and/or Hagrid after that. I see a good portion of the more minor characters becoming casualties during what is sure to be the final battle like Tonks, Narcissa, Bellatrix, Wormtail and maybe even Percy Weasley.

Melanie: Voldemort, Snape, Hagrid and/or Prof. McGonagle

Is the “chosen one” actually Harry or Neville?

Leslie: I think it might wind up being Neville. What a kick in the pants to find out his crotchety old grandmother was right all along! He might also be the one to finally off “He who must not be named,” too!

Melanie: I think Neville will be, too. Think back to the prophecy given in books 5 and 6. What a twist!

Is Professor Snape essentially good or evil?

Leslie: I’m thinking Snape is going to be shown to be a very loyal ally to Harry and the Order of the Phoenix when all is said and done. I really anticipate that he will die and the truth will be revealed too late.

Melanie: I totally agree with you, Mom.

Will Ron and Hermione’s relationship continue in the last book?

Leslie: I think so…well, if neither one of them dies. ;-) I think that is why I see Ginny dying in this book. It would be the ultimate loss for Harry who has already lost so many important people in his life. I just feel that Ron and Hermione will be okay for some reason.

Melanie: Um, yeah. They’ll be okay unless Viktor Krum is still alive and comes onto the scene again. What would Herminone do then?

What do you see happening that isn’t your typical prediction?

Leslie: I’d be tickled pink if Dumbledore weren’t quite dead somehow or if we knew that somehow his spirit lived on…. or if Harry could be reunited with his Godfather Sirius again. Either one of those things would totally make my day and I’d be at peace with the series ending.

Melanie: Narcissa and Draco Malfoy are going to be recruited at the last mintue to the good side with the rest of the Order of the Phoenix crew.

Well, now we just have to wait for the book to come out! Feel free to leave comments and your own predictions below if you’d like!
And whatever you do this summer, I encourage you to read not just to your kids, but WITH your children! In our house, we frequently read the same books together - yes, even the school summer reading list ones - and then we like to compare our thoughts and opinions afterwards. It really is a great thing! One of our favorites last year was Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas.

Take care and I’ll blog again in VA.

The packers are coming! The packers are coming!

July 6th, 2007

Well, that time has come when I must leave the fate of every single item in our home to complete strangers. Yes, I’m talking about our move out of SC next week. We’ve done this a few times now so we’re not utterly clueless (I think we’re on move #16 now,) but moving never fails to give me butterflies in my stomach because of the what ifs - those things that could happen or things you might have forgotten this time around. I’ve called the phone company. I’ve called the cable company. I’ve submitted the change of address cards for the post office. We’ve hired the cleaners. I’ve got my wonderful Italian handyman working 0n the new house even as I type this getting it ready for our arrival. But, I just know there are things I’m forgetting this time! I’ve had a little on my mind lately…which leads me to my next topic.

Unfortunately before all of our boxes are even unpacked in our new home I have to start my cancer treatment with my new doctors. I’ll be undergoing radiation and then chemotherapy for about 6 to 9 weeks. I’m still planning on opening up Leslie du Mont Photography for business asap, but it might take me a little longer to unpack and get my business license set up. The number of sessions I take on will be a bit more limited than they were before. Thank goodness I have three incredible best friends, a caring church, and my wonderful mother in VA Beach to take care of me while I undergo my treatments. Rob, Melanie and I are so grateful for them all!

Anyway, I’m off to go finish gathering up the things the movers will not pack! This will be my last blog post until we arrive in VA in a week. Cross your fingers for us that this will be another seamless move!

Goodbye, Charleston! Leslie

Happy July 4th!

July 4th, 2007
Get your sparklers ready, everyone. It’s July 4th! For a real treat this holiday, try tempting your family’s tummy by making Watermelon Sorbet. I guarantee that it will cool things off a bit! You can even use your handy ice cream maker to hurry the process. The following recipe makes about two quarts.

Watermelon Sorbet

Ingredients
1/4 of a large watermelon, cubed
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2/3 cup light corn syrup

Directions
To make about eight cups, cube 1/4 of a large watermelon, remove seeds and puree the fruit.
In a saucepan, combine 2/3 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water and 2/3 cup light corn syrup. Stir over medium heat, bring the mixture to a boil.
Simmer, stirring for 5 more minutes.
Turn off the heat, stir in the juice from half a lemon.
When the syrup has cooled to room temperature, add the watermelon puree, then pour the mixture into the canister of your ice cream maker.
Then proceed according to the manufacturer’s directions or follow the directions for freezing granita.

Enjoy!
